Captain’s Corner – December 2025 News

Welcome to the last Captains Corner of 2025 and another successful year has flown by here in Marbella. Despite the arrival of cooler, wetter winter conditions on the Costa del Sol, the course remains in superb shape. The Monday, Wednesday and Friday members’ competitions continue to be very well attended and all members are welcome to join in these friendly and competitive golf competitions.

The highlights of the year included the exciting finishes in the club’s annual knockout competitions and a highly respectable first season in the Costa del Sol Senior League for the Men’s team.

Costa del Sol Senior League

MG secured a very respectable 5th position in our Senior League Debut season. 20 different players represented the club across 18 games, visiting new courses and forging new friendships. While the final away game against El Candado resulted in a 7.5 – 1.5 defeat that dampened earlier optimism from a stunning 6.5 – 2.5 home win, MG ultimately finished in a highly commendable 5th position in the final league table.

A special mention goes to Stephen Cullen, who was the club’s top scorer with an impressive 14 points throughout the league season, well done Stephen. The club looks forward to building on this strong foundation in next year’s competition.

The Gran Finale of the senior league was held at La Cañada on the 1st December and was attended by over 90 players from the 9 clubs in the league. The format was pairs better ball and the game was played in great conditions. Home advantage was always going to be important on this beautiful course near Sotogrande, but the MG teams all performed admirably, with Joe McKelvey and Stephen Gilks achieving the club’s best result, securing 5th place with an excellent 41 points. Well done to everyone for taking part and your support is appreciated.

Captain’s Day

This yearly event was held in October and was very well attended with 60 members taking part in the golf competition and many more joining later for a fantastic lunch, prize giving and great entertainment provided by Mark Connor. The weather was kind to us and in a very close Stableford competitions Rune Nielsen claimed victory in the Men’s and Edna Graneli in the Ladies sections.

Autumn Scramble

This well-attended Texas Scramble event saw the team of myself, Steve Cullen, Martin Ingham, and Ladies Captain Cristina Fernandez take the win with an impressive score of 9 birdies and 9 pars. A delicious meal on the terrace afterwards was enjoyed by all. Thanks to everyone for taking part.

2025 Knockout Matchplay finals

The club’s prestigious knockout tournaments delivered intense competition this year. The finals of both the singles and doubles have now been played.

In the Singles Knockout, defending champion John Collins once again demonstrated his prowess, successfully retaining his title after a gripping final match against a determined Roger Williams. Congratulations to John on his continued dominance in the singles, and nae luck to Roger but well done on reaching the final and taking some big scalps on the way.

The Doubles Knockout final proved to be an even more nail-biting affair, contested in challenging wet and cold conditions. The underdog pair of Paul Judson and Paul Weightman emerged victorious, securing a hard fought 1 up win against the favored duo of Joe Horvath and Sue Keenan Sweeney. A fantastic display of resilience and skill from the two Paul’s and nae luck to Joe and Sue.

It has been a very busy and rewarding time at MG. Thanks to everyone who has taken part and supported the club and its competitions.

Finally, I would like to wish you all a wonderful Christmas and a Happy New Year and I will look forward to seeing you at the club.
