Captain’s Corner – August 2025 News

Hello and welcome to the Captain’s corner. The warm, beautiful weather is a sure sign that summer is in full swing here on the coast. Whether you’ve been out on the course or relaxing with a glass of sangria, it’s been a great few months.

While our summer season typically sees fewer members, as many return to their home countries for a cooler climate, our weekly competitions on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays are still very popular and well attended. All members are welcome to join in for some friendly and competitive golf and of course to meet new friends. We have also successfully streamlined the sign-up and live scoring process for our federated competitions, and members have quickly adapted to the new Clapphouse app.

Senior League update

Our Men’s Senior League team was in action against Azata Golf Club in June, playing both the home and away games. Unfortunately, the results didn’t go our way. We were narrowly beaten 5-4 at home and 7-2 away at Azata. While this has dented our title ambitions, we remain optimistic. With five games left to play, we’re aiming for a strong finish and hope to secure a respectable position in our inaugural year in the senior league.

A big thank you to the team who played in the Azata matches: Conrad Mazen, Paul Judson, Roger Williams, Simon Glithro, Steve Cullen, Gary O’Neill, Andrew Farrant, and myself.

Mixed Interclub competition

The Mixed Interclub competition is well underway, with our team having played five matches so far. This is a very popular competition played in July and August at six different courses on the Costa del Sol and each match consists of a team of six men and six ladies playing in pairs in a better ball format. The top four scores contribute to the team’s overall total.

Huge thanks to Roger Kemp and Chrissie Wills for managing the team and handling all the organization. Despite their efforts, the luck on the greens hasn’t been on our side. In the games played so far at Santa Maria, Miraflores, La Hacienda Alcaidesa and El Paraiso we finished in third place, and we finished in 2nd place in the home match at MGCC. Currently we are in 3rd place in the league but as there is only 1 game remaining to play at La Cala we will need some of the other teams to have an off day if we are to regain the Mixed Interclub Trophy. Thanks to everyone who has played in these matches so far.

Knockout competitions

The knockout competitions are proving to be extremely exciting, and the singles competition is now at the semi-final stage. The first semi-final will see Grant Evans play John Collins, who was last year’s champion, while Roger Williams and I will play in the other semi-final. Good luck to all semifinalists!

Many members are now looking forward to the MGCC Club Championship, the main competition of the year. Members are making the final tweaks to their swings in the hope of performing well. This competition is played over 2 days starting on Monday 22nd September and the final round is on Wednesday 24th September. Good luck to everyone!

That’s all from my corner and I hope you enjoy the remainder of the summer, and I will look forward to seeing you all at the club.

Best regards,

Jan Zadruzynski
