Captain’s Corner – June 2025 News

Welcome to the June newsletter. Time, as always, is marching on, and it’s fantastic to see the weather on the coast warming up nicely for summer. The earlier rains feel like a distant memory now, and the course is looking absolutely superb after the recent maintenance.

It’s been a very busy time for the Club. Our members’ competitions held every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, continue to be incredibly well attended. They offer a fantastic environment for everyone to enjoy golf in a friendly, yet competitive manner in one of the best locations on the Costa del Sol.

Senior League Action

The Men’s Costa del Sol Senior League is now at the halfway stage, and the MGCC team has been on fire! We’ve played three crucial matches. First, we secured a magnificent 7.5 – 1.5 win at home against Alhaurin Golf Club followed by a gallant 4.5 – 4.5 draw in the away game. It was another stellar performance from the entire team, with everyone contributing. Huge thanks to Team Captain Joe McKelvey, David Stewart, Tomas Hjelte, Martin Ingham, Roger Kemp, and Roger Williams for their outstanding efforts.

Next, we hosted La Duquesa Golf Club and the team delivered another superb display. Team Captain Brian St. John, Alan Richardson, Steve Cullen, Roger Kemp, Roger Williams, and Gary O’Neill produced a stunning performance, resulting in a record 8 -1 home win for MGCC in a Senior League match. Our sincere thanks and well done to all involved.

As you can see, these fantastic results have propelled MGCC into a very respectable position in the league. All eyes are now on the upcoming home and away games against Azata at the end of June. Remember, all male members over 50 are welcome to put their names on the team sheets and get involved in this exciting competition!

Recent Club Competitions

The last two months have also seen several major competitions at the Club.

First was the Bob Naify Day. A massive congratulations to Edna Graneli on her big win! Nae luck to Steve Cullen, who narrowly missed out on the big prize on a back 9 countback!

Then we had the much-anticipated President’s Day, which was very well-attended. It was a great day, culminating in a fabulous lunch on the big terrace with great entertainment. Our big winners were Cristina Fernandez, and nae luck to Paul Weightman, who missed out on the main Honors Board prize by a whisker! You can check this newsletter for the entire news article on the winners. Special thanks to our President, Steve Cullen, and the entire MGCC staff for arranging another great day.

Mixed Interclub competition

We’re really looking forward to the start of the 2025 Mixed Interclub Competition, with the first game teeing off at Santa Maria Golf Club on Friday June 13th 2025. This promises to be an exciting year for this annual competition, and we extend a big thanks to Roger Kemp and Chrissie Wills for organizing the MGCC team and the overall competition. They and I have high hopes of regaining the trophy this year. In total, six clubs are competing in this year’s event.

Knockout competitions

Our singles and doubles knockout competitions are progressing well and also providing some truly memorable matches and have certainly thrown up a few surprises. In the singles, there was a major shock when Paul Judson, one of the pre-tournament favorites, was knocked out by Roger Williams in a thrilling encounter that went all the way to the 18th green. Nae luck Paul.

Charity event Avance Positivo

Finally mark your calendars for Saturday June 28, 2025, as the Club will be hosting the Avance Positivo Charity Day. This is an excellent event featuring a golf competition with fantastic prizes, followed by lunch and entertainment. All members are very welcome to sign up for this wonderful cause. More details are available on the members’ noticeboard, in this newsletter, on the app and on the club website.

That’s all for now from my corner, but I’ll be sure to update you on all competition progress in the next newsletter. In the meantime, I look forward to seeing you all around the club

Best regards,

Jan Zadruzynski
