Captain’s Corner – October 2025 News

Welcome to the Captains corner. The weather continues to be glorious on the Costa del Sol and the course is looking good with the fairways arguably the best they have been for many years. A perfect combination for happy days playing golf at MGCC.

As the summer comes to an end, we are thrilled to see many members returning to the club to enjoy the Andalusian climate and the members’ competitions which are held every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. As always it is recommended to book ahead using the Clapphouse App to ensure you don’t miss out. All members are most welcome to join in these competitions and it is a great way to meet new friends and play competitive golf.

Club Championship

Our flagship event of the year was a sellout success and was held on the 22nd and 24th of September in near perfect conditions. As expected, it was an excellent competition played in a marvelous atmosphere and spirit. The main Gross competition was a closely contested event and after the 1st round was too close to call. The defending champion Conrad Mazen showed his usual coolness and determination as well as great course management to record his third consecutive championship at MGCC by 4 shots with a winning score of 160 strokes over the 2 rounds, a fantastic achievement and a big congratulations to Conrad. In second place Bjorn Eldoy pushed all the way and well done Bjorn for playing a great competition!

In the all-important Nett event Alan Richardson cruised to victory and congratulations to Alan who for some time was pushing Conrad for the main prize.

Mixed Interclub competition

The final game at La Cala in August didn’t deliver the miracle we needed to win the overall competition, but a great team effort and performance resulted in MGCC finishing in 3rd place in the league. Congratulations to La Cala who won the overall trophy on a countback against Miraflores. Thanks to all the members who participated in the 6 matches and also to Roger Kemp and Chrissie Wills for the organization of the league.

Seniors League

This very popular competition is now in the final stages. Since the last newsletter we have played twice against Miraflores, home and away. Away from home we suffered a narrow 5-4 defeat but at home we overturned this and had a convincing 6-3 win. As you can see from the league table these 10 points gained keep MGCC right in the mix for the title. With 2 games remaining against El Candado home and away we are keeping our fingers crossed that some other results go our way and we can produce strong performances in the final 2 matches. Many thanks to Joe McKelvey, David Stewart, Steve Cullen, Roger Williams, Paul Judson and Andrew Farrant who all performed so well against Miraflores.

Knockout competition

The singles and doubles knockout competitions for 2025 are coming to a conclusion and in the singles, there have been 2 really exciting semifinal ties. In the first match Roger Williams had a stunning win against me on the 1st extra hole after being all square after 18 holes. Congratulations to Roger and nae luck Jan. In the second semifinal the defending champion John Collins overcame the big outsider Grant Evans after a very tough match 2 up. So well done to John and we are looking forward to a great final between John Collins and Roger Williams.

That’s all from my corner and I will look forward to seeing you all at Captains Day on 17th October for probably the biggest competition of the year so far.

Best regards,

Jan Zadruzynski
