Welcome to the 3rd Newsletter of 2026. Time is flying by and we are already halfway through the year, the weather has finally settled, and summer has officially arrived at Higuerón Marbella Golf Resort. The course is in magnificent condition, which is a testament to the excellent work carried out by our greens staff.
It is fantastic to have clarity for next year. I was delighted that it has been confirmed that the club and the golf course will remain fully open for the duration of 2027, which is wonderful news for all members.
As always, it has been a busy time at the club. It’s been particularly great to see so many new members joining our weekly competitions and getting actively involved in club life. A warm welcome to you all.
Costa del Sol Seniors’ League
The league is now nearing the halfway stage, and the men’s team has played two more crucial matches. The first tie was mired in controversy and will undoubtedly be talked about for years to come. We played Miraflores away and put in one of the best away performances in our league history, winning comfortably 6.5 – 2.5. It was a first-class effort by the team me, Stephen Cullen, Roger Williams, Joe Horvath, Joe McKelvey, and Stephen Walton. However, it was later identified that there had been a discrepancy regarding the strokes awarded to the players. Consequently, it was decided that this away match must be replayed later in the year. Full credit to the team, who put this frustration entirely out of their minds to go out and comfortably win the home match 5.5 – 3.5.
Our second fixture was always going to be a tough test against the reigning champions, Alhaurín. Fielding a heavily depleted side, we narrowly lost the home match 3.5 – 5.5. The away leg, played at the notoriously difficult Alhaurín course, resulted in a very close 2 – 7 defeat. My thanks go to the team myself, Stephen Cullen, Brian Smith, Roger Williams, Simon Glithro, John Collins, and Alan Richardson. A special mention must go to John and Alan for a marvelous, battling performance to secure a brilliant draw on the very last hole away from home.
We have one remaining match to play against La Cala before the summer recess, and we are hoping to sign off with a strong performance.
Matchplay Knockout Competitions
Excitement and interest around this year’s knockout competitions continue to build, with some fantastic ties played over the past few months.
In the Singles the highly fancied Marcel Schoenmakers outpowered the underdog, Grant Evans. Eduardo Tubio found some fine form on the greens to get past Saskia Schoenmakers, while Paul Jones’s unexpectedly fine run came to an abrupt halt against an in-form Simon Glithro.
In the Doubles in a surprising turn of events, ex-President Ray Norris and Matt Farrell easily defeated one of the pre-tournament favorites Stephen Gilks and Gareth Thurlow who had been strongly tipped to go all the way. There was also a massive win for Roger Kemp and Chrissie Wills, who easily overcame Paul Winter and Eduardo Tubio.
We are all eagerly anticipating the final stages of these competitions over the coming months.
The President’s Cup
As one of the most prestigious prizes to win at Higuerón Marbella Golf, we were delighted to see a fantastic turnout for this flagship event, hosted by our Club President, Stephen Cullen. The trophy was hotly contested in very testing conditions. The big winner on the day was Roger Williams, who put together a superb round. While three players finished tied for second place, it was David Wadmore, who claimed the runner-up spot on a card countback.
Congratulations to our winners, to everyone who took part, and to all the guests who joined us afterward for a delicious lunch and fantastic entertainment.
